Step 1, set the band. Our editors assign a 1-5 star 'recommendation index' based on a tool's real-world usability, feature maturity, and word of mouth among practitioners. That decides the score band the tool sits in: 3-star tools land in 7.00-8.00, 4-star in 8.00-9.00, and 5-star in 9.00-10.00.
Step 2, rank within the band. Within the same band, the system scores by verifiable fields - whether a free plan exists, number of core features, FAQ completeness, tag richness, documentation depth, pros/cons count, and how complete the 'best for' description is - and normalizes the order inside that band. That is why two equally popular tools can still be separated by free quota, feature depth, and documentation quality.
Note: the composite score uses two decimal places to separate positions within the same recommendation band; equal scores are treated as ties.
